Utley keeps Phillies' hopes alive in 8-6 World Series Game 5 win
PHILADELPHIA The champagne is on ice for two more days.
The Phillies would like to keep it there until Thursday and drink it themselves.
The New York Yankees failed to clinch their 27th World Series title on Monday night as the Phillies staved off elimination, 8-6, in the Seriesâ final game at Citizens Bank Park. The Series moves back to New York for Game 6 Wednesday night with the Yankees holding a 3-2 lead.
Pedro Martinez will start for the Phillies against a to-be-determined starter for the Yankees. A Philliesâ win Wednesday would set up a decisive Game 7 on Thursday.
The Phillies stayed alive Monday behind two home runs by Chase Utley, including a three-run blast off A.J. Burnett in the first inning, and a strong pitching performance by Cliff Lee.
Utley now has five home runs in the Series, tying a World Series record set by Reggie Jackson in 1977, an accomplishment that earned Jackson the nickname Mr. October. Lee, who allowed just one run in a complete game Monday, gave up five runs in seven-plus innings three came in the eighth with a six-run lead for his second Series win.
