'This is amazing' - Hudson fans celebrate on Broadway
Sairilin Parra and Ricky Oquendo were bleeding blue yesterday and it had nothing to do with the cold weather.
The Hudson County corrections officers donned their Yankees gear and joined thousands of fans headed to Broadway in Manhattan hoping to catch a glimpse of the 2009 World Series champions.
"This is amazing," Parra, a Jersey City resident, said after stepping off a PATH train at the World Trade Center station.
It was the second time Oquendo, of Union City, had attended a ticker-tape parade for the Bronx Bombers. He was there in 2000 after the Yanks beat the Mets in a Subway Series. Now he was back after they beat the Phillies in the Turnpike Series.
"We waited nine years for this," he said.
"Yankees are the best team in baseball," his brother Alfredo, also of Union City, chimed in.
As fans neared Broadway, they filled every inch of roadway on side streets, climbing on scaffolding, cars and trucks, traffic lights and anything else they could find.
Parra and the Oquendos made it to Vesey Street, where the tall floats could be seen in the distance. Fans everywhere along the route waved signs and banners. Some wore sweatshirts with slogans like "You know what we do in Brooklyn? We smoke Phillies."
Toilet paper was unrolled from skyscrapers and shredded paper rained down like snow.
And while it was a celebration of the Yankees' 27th championship title, fans near City Hall chanted "28," hoping the winning will continue next year.
