Second suspect arrested in killing of New Brunswick man
A Florence man arrested yesterday is the second suspect charged in connection with the shooting death of a New Brunswick man.
Angel Guadalupe, 29, was arrested shortly after 7 a.m. in an apartment in Trenton, Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan announced in a joint statement with New Brunswick police Director Anthony Caputo.
Guadalupe is charged with the murder of Anthony Filardi, 30, who was found on Lee Avenue between Seaman and Handy streets in New Brunswick after police received a 911 call at 5:07 a.m. on Oct. 23.
Filardi was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where he was pronounced dead at 6:34 a.m.
Members of the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office Fugitive Unit arrested Guadalupe, working with the Mercer County Prosecutor's office and Trenton Police, Kaplan said.
Kaplan said the apprehension followed an intense investigation by New Brunswick police Detective Ronoldy Martinez and investigator Eleazar Ricardo of the prosecutor's office.
Guadalupe was also charged with armed robbery, carjacking, unlawful possession of a shotgun and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
The other suspect, Michael Mercado, 28, of New Brunswick, arrested four days after the shooting, faces the same charges as Guadalupe. Guadalupe has served four years in state prison on theft and drug charges that date to 2002, according to the state Department of Corrections website.
He was released in April 2008. One of the motives for the slaying was robbery, authorities said. They said other possible motives are also under investigation.
After the shooting, Mercado fled with the victim's car, which was found in New Brunswick the next day, said Middlesex County Assistant Prosecutor Nicholas Sewitch.
Authorities have not said which of the two suspects they believe used a shotgun to kill Filardi.
Mercado and Guadalupe are being held at the Middlesex County jail in North Brunswick in lieu of $2.25 million bail each.
