    MORRISTOWN

The main event is months away, but fundraising efforts have already begun for a run/walk that will be held in memory of a college hockey player from Parsippany.

Friends of Madeline Loftus are organizing a 5K run/walk in honor of the 24-year-old who died when Continental Connection Flight 3407 crashed near Buffalo in February. The MADdash 5K Run/Walk will be held at 8 a.m. May 1, at the Mack Cali Business Center in Parsippany.

To help make the 5K possible, a happy hour event will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 11, at Sona Thirteen, located at 13 South St. in Morristown.

Proceeds raised from the 5K will go toward the Madeline Loftus Memorial Scholarship Fund. The fund will provide financial aid for two college-bound high school seniors.

Loftus played hockey for Buffalo State from 2002 to 2004 before transferring to St. Mary's in Minnesota. At the time of the crash, Loftus was flying from Newark to Buffalo for a reunion game with other former players.

According to friend Dana DiGioacchino, the 5K will be the first major event held in Loftus' honor, and the only memorial held by friends in northern Jersey.
