MANNINGTON TWP. - Two seats are open on the township committee this year - one a full three-year full term and the other a one-year unexpired term.

Newcomers Democrat John Emel and Independent Bill Hancock III are going up against Republican incumbent Ernest F. Tark Jr. for the three-year term on the three-member committee.

Republican Joanne M. Wright is running unopposed for the one-year unexpired term.

The committee is currently comprised of two Republicans and one Democrat.

Here is a look at the candidates for the three-year term:

Emel, 25, is a lifelong resident of Mannington who lives here with his wife, Pamela, and their three sons.

He is an eighth-grade science teacher at Penns Grove Middle School and also works on his family farm.

As a lifelong resident of the township, he has a vested interest in the taxes and services of the township.

"I want to make sure the people that make our laws and influence our policies are qualified people with the right interests in mind," he said.

Emel would like to maintain and keep Mannington a rural area and continue to protect its farmland. He would like to continue to have reasonable, affordable taxes.
